Introduction
The world is forever growing, and changing with each generation. To focus specifically on the improvement of a topic over time, racism comes immediately to mind. This has occurred for centuries, and took its worst form in the practice of slavery. This practice occurred in other countries before it came to take root in America. It lasted for several long, excruciating years and claimed a considerable amount of lives. Of course, there were citizens who felt this act was absolutely intolerable, while the opposition thought it was completely necessary. For those North Carolinians who thought it to be immoral, why choose to participate in the heinous, inhumane act of slavery? And for those who felt it was a necessity, what exactly was it about slavery that made it so compelling?
Thankfully, there were brave souls who fought in secret to end this terrible practice of dehumanization. Throughout a combination of secret words, safe houses and use of the Underground Railroad, some slaves were able to be saved and reunited with their families until eventually; slavery was outlawed and ended completely in the United States of America. It wasn’t until a few years after President Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation that slavery was said to be officially abolished once and for all. Arduous a task as it may have been, throughout a great deal of patience, cooperativeness, hope, planning and prayer, this newfound freedom by way of abolishment was able to occur in North Carolina.
